Speaker of the Day: Dr Susan Wilson/Tumaini Fund

Medical Doctor in the UK for the last 42 years on an island of Guernsey.  She has been partnering with Rotaries throughout her work. Providing clean and safe water to Tumaini. Tumaini means Hope.

The area was hit by AIDS, Susan and her family went to serve in a mission hospital where she delivered many children of mothers with AIDS. Many children are orphaned. It’s a very poor area. 200,000 orphans are estimated in the area. 50,000 orphans are now being supported. They began getting mosquito nets, books, pencils and clothes. The project is working to get these children into schools. Many children die of malaria. 50% better chance of surviving childhood with nets. They have built a school and are planning more. Some students have continued to become doctors, engineers, nurses, and other professions.

Irrigation projects, water wells, houses, skill schools are all a part of the results of the funding. $3000 for a well that supplies 1000 people.
